Bronze vs. Granite Grave Markers

Understanding the difference before you choose a memorial

Choosing between a bronze marker and a granite marker can feel confusing at first. Both are common cemetery memorials, but they look different, age differently, and offer very different design options.

Two Common Choices, Two Very Different Looks

When families begin looking at flat grave markers, one of the first questions is whether they should choose bronze or granite. In some cemeteries, that decision may already be made by cemetery rules. In others, the family may have the choice.

Bronze markers usually have a cast metal face mounted to a granite base. Granite markers are made from solid stone and are engraved directly into the surface.

Both can be respectful and appropriate. The right choice depends on the cemetery, the family’s preferences, the desired design, and how personal they want the memorial to feel.
