Flat Grave Markers vs. Upright Headstones
Understanding the difference before you choose a memorial
Choosing between a flat grave marker and an upright headstone is one of the first decisions many families face when planning a cemetery memorial. Both options can be beautiful, meaningful, and lasting — but they serve different purposes and are not always allowed in every cemetery section.
At Austin Stone & Monument, we help families understand their options clearly before they make a decision, so the memorial fits the cemetery, honors their loved one, and feels right for the family.
Serving Families in Wichita Falls, Decatur, & surrounding North Texas communities.
What Is the Main Difference?
A flat grave marker lies level with the ground or very close to the ground. It is usually made of granite, bronze, or a combination of both.
An upright headstone stands vertically above the grave and is usually made from granite. Upright memorials are often more visible from a distance and allow more room for design, shape, lettering, symbols, and personal details.
Neither option is automatically “better.” The right choice depends on the cemetery rules, the family’s preferences, the amount of space available, and the type of memorial they want to create.
See the Difference

Flat markers are a common choice in many cemeteries because they create a clean, uniform appearance across a cemetery section.
Upright headstones are the more traditional standing monuments many people picture when they think of a cemetery memorial. They are often chosen when families want a memorial with more presence, more design space, or a more personalized shape.
