What Affects the Cost of a Headstone?
What families should understand before ordering a cemetery memorial.
The cost of a headstone depends on more than just the words engraved on it. Memorial style, size, granite color, cemetery requirements, installation, and special features can all affect the final price.
At Austin Stone & Monument, standard engraving on the front is included. We do not charge by the letter, word, or basic design element.
Serving Families in Wichita Falls, Decatur, & surrounding North Texas communities.
Why Headstone Prices Can Vary
No two memorials are exactly the same. A simple flat marker will usually cost less than a large upright monument, and a standard gray granite memorial will usually cost less than a specialty granite color.
The goal of this guide is to explain the main things that affect headstone pricing so your family can make a more informed decision before choosing a memorial.

Main Cost Factors

Memorial Style
Flat markers, bevels, slants, and upright headstones are priced differently because they require different amounts of granite, labor, and installation.

Size of the Memorial
Larger memorials require more granite, more handling, and more installation work. A single marker will usually cost less than a companion or family memorial.

Granite Color
Some granite colors are more common and cost-effective. Specialty colors such as black, red, blue, brown, or pink may increase the price.

Cemetery Requirements
Cemetery rules can affect the size, style, foundation, placement, and installation requirements for the memorial. Cemeteries may also require permits as well.

Special Features
Porcelain photos, vases, bronze accents, laser etching, back engraving, and hand-textured work can add to the final cost.

Installation
Delivery, foundation work, setting, and cemetery coordination are all part of making sure the memorial is installed correctly.
What About Engraving?
At Austin Stone & Monument, standard engraving is included in the price of the headstone. We do not count every letter, word, or basic object in the design.
That means your family can include names, dates, inscriptions, and normal design elements without feeling like every word is being added to the bill.
Some special engraving or custom work may affect the price, especially if the family wants engraving on the back of the headstone or more advanced design features.
What Engraving is Included?
Any standard engraving on the front.
