How Long Does It Take to Get a Headstone Installed?
What families should understand about memorial timelines.
The honest answer is: it depends on the type of memorial, the cemetery, the granite, and the approval process. At Austin Stone & Monument, we walk families through each step so there are no surprises along the way.
We will give you the most honest timeline we can, but headstone installation involves several steps outside of any one company’s control.
Serving Families in Wichita Falls, Decatur, & surrounding North Texas communities.
Most headstones are not installed immediately — and that is normal.
When a family orders a headstone, there are several steps that happen before it can be placed in the cemetery. The memorial has to be designed, approved, ordered or manufactured, engraved, delivered, and then scheduled for installation.
Some memorials move faster than others. A simple flat marker may take less time than a large upright headstone, custom shape, specialty granite color, or memorial with bronze accents.
The important thing is knowing what affects the timeline before you begin.
Main Factors that Influence Memorial Timelines
Granite Color
Timelines vary between colors of granite. Depending on whether it is an import color or domestic color.
Weather
Timelines can be affected by adverse weather conditions.
Memorial Type
Timelines can vary depending on the complexity of the memorial.
The Basic Timeline

1. Design and Approval
This is where we gather the names, dates, inscriptions, emblems, layout preferences, and cemetery requirements. The design must be reviewed and approved before production begins.

2. Cemetery Approval
Many cemeteries have rules about size, material, placement, and installation. Some cemeteries respond quickly. Others take more time.

3. Granite or Bronze Production
If the memorial is a standard size and color, the process may move faster. If the memorial requires a special granite color, custom shape, bronze work, or hand-textured details, it can take longer.

4. Engraving and Finishing
Once the design is approved and the stone is ready, the memorial is engraved and finished.

5. Delivery and installation
After the memorial is completed, it has to be delivered, scheduled, and installed at the cemetery. Weather, cemetery access, and ground conditions can affect installation timing.
